When I was little, I spent lots of weekends with my Mamaw and PaFather (my Dad's mama and dad) Each weekend was pretty much the same. PaFather took me to Safeway, where we got chicken legs, and sometimes a bag of bruised bananas (for banana bread) and cans without labels from the discount area. Then, we headed to the day-old bread store, where he introduced me to the nice old ladies who worked there, and they acted like they hadn't met me just a few weeks before. For dinner, we had fried chicken (PaFather and I were leg-people... Mamaw loved wings) and mac-n-cheese. PaFather slept early in the evenings, and usually got up around 2 AM to read the paper, sit at the kitchen table, and smoke and drink coffee. So evening belonged to me and Mamaw.. there was Golden Girls, Love Boat, fried egg sandwiches, and oreos. Saturdays were for playing outside, raking pine needles into neat little rows to create a playhouse of sorts. I had an extensive imagination. (HeHeHe... HAD, like I don't have one even now!) Mamaw painted ceramics, and knitted, and she tried to teach me, on more than one occasion, to crochet. I was the QUEEN of crochet chains. My shoestrings were crocheted, my hair ribbons were crocheted, hell, I probably tried to crochet myself a jump rope. But anything more than chains, and I was LOST.
Fast forward 27 years.... I'm feel all creative, and being all poor. So, what can I do that's creative, and cheap? So I'm wandering around at WalMart- the mecha superstore for broke people- and I'm looking at all the craft stuff, when I see all the beautiful yarn.. and I remember- CROCHET!!! So, I bought several kinds of yarn, and three different crochet hooks, and using trial and error and YouTube videos, I have taught myself to crochet!! Just look at what I can do!!!
So I made this super-adorable crochet hat for my friend Judy's newest grandson, who will be born in December!!! Now I am working on a granny-square blanket for my cousin Tommy's new baby, due in February, and then I will make one for my cousin Chris's new baby boy, due in March!! I am loving the crochet!! More wonderful project pics to come!
